Bit help please chaps? I had a small brown duck just off the Groyne this morning in the gloom with no bins (2 dogs in tow). I thought possibly Scaup, but looked too small and then checked my books and thought Common Scoter (possibly female as lighter "flanks") but I've never seen one in the river before? It did dive several times and stayed under quite a while if that helps?

Sounds more than likely a female C.Scoter Rob, Ive seen them just of the pier and beach here before.

11 Snow buntings near the coastal path this morning in WCP. I was tipped off about a few here before I visited but a nice surprise when this flock showed. Also a couple of Pinkie flocks on the move south, the first one a tad far out over the sea(presumed pinkies) was a huge number! maybe 400 or so?. The second flock(70+) passed over slightly inland and was thought to be Barnacles but the "enhanced " record shot shows them as Pinkies..one for you Brian S. Also Jan's told me about 150+ going over our gaff this morn. at 8.00ish.
Walked the lenght of the Leas (including Trow) coastal path and Leas hedge this afternoon with little on show. Some nice Fungi thro-!

Some interesting stuff at the ringing hut....especially the Spuggyhawk late afternoon, Jas will no doubt elaborate further.

had a quick look over boldon flats this morning didnt see any pinkfooted geese but there was 93 greylag in the field over the road 4 heron, wigeon, teal, lapwing curlew and lot of gulls on there including about 10 GBB. whitburn mudhole 1 bar tiled godwit, 1 knot, purple sand, redshank, oystercatcher. WCP couple of redwing loads of of blackbirds. 30 curlew on the range and about the same number on jackies beach. 20 c. scoters flew north 2 RT divers, 7 brent geese, 4 gannets all going north. 1 guilliemot on the sea in front of the obs. as i went back through the coastal park i noticed the gulls were swooping at a SE owl high up in the distance only managed a record shot very poor light today. also saw my first woodcock of the autumn, flushed by a dog walker behind the whitburn lodge. peregrine flew very low over lizard lane at the golf club on my way home.
