Hi Folks - update as promised.

I've spent the last 6 weeks or so pacing the corridors of the Kestrel maternity ward worrying about ‘what’s happening up in the box’……..
To keep disturbance to an absolute minimum I only checked the box three times over this period and I’m delighted to say that, today I became the very proud uncle of five beautiful Kestrel chicks!
Mam, Dad & youngsters all doing well – uncle Dougie smoking a cigar!

Cheers.

Hi Folks,
Just thought I’d share this........
At the back end of 2008 Steve built a Kestrel nest box which I erected locally on January 10th 2009. Each year since then there has been passing interest at the start of every breeding season, with both M&F birds checking the box out during late February/ early March, but always deciding against occupation.

This year however things are a bit different

The birds first visited during early March and have been in and around the box on a daily basis since the 25th and I’m pleased to say it appears that egg laying is now complete & incubation well underway.
I will post progress reports in the coming weeks/months.
Cheers,
Dougie.

Nice one Dougie - congrats!

Paul - do you mind if I ask where the shots of the Pied Flycatcher were taken? If it's a secret feel free to tell me to sod off :-)

Great stuff Doug. I have a small feeding station in Jarrow that would be excellent for Raptors.

How do I get advice for the Raptor/Owl nestbox etc

Nice one with the Kestrels Dougie we need updates until they have all fledged, names -pictures etc.

Chris as usualwith my pictures the Flycatchers were in Durham- Tunstall Reservoir in Wolsingham, a great place for Pied Flycatchers and Redstarts although the Redstarts I saw yesterday were all at the tops of trees and unphotographable. Unfortunatley I don't know of any Local South Tyneside area's for them.

never heard of pied flycatchers breeding in south tyneside but i did have this migrant in the doctors garden today, i know what you mean about them being at the tree tops Paul, very hard to get anything but a photograph of the underside of them. sometimes its best off settling for a distant shot as it reduces the angle, lthough it does reduce quality aswell. loads of whitethroats on cleadon hills and down the coastal park. this one was collecting nest material (WCP).

Chris, Wood warblers have been heard in the same wood at Tunstall this year/week but as far as I know none have been seen. at least one Cuckoo is also in the area at the moment I heard one yesterday but not a hope of finding it.

There have been sightings of WW's at Hamsterley 15 minutes drive away and also seen and heard at Muggleswick 30 minutes away where there are also Pied Fly's and Redstarts so I guess the whole area is potentially good for all of them.

Keith them Redstarts were a bugger I did try to back off to get a better angle but all I could see were trees I got some great pictures of Branches with out of focus blobs in them
