Leas dog walk this morning and 3 Skylarks were soaring and singing this time for much longer than last week when they were only in the air briefly, so I think it is officially spring.

Also a Curlew on the cliff top path next to Frenchmans drinking from a puddle.

Great Grey Shrike Family

Hi All
Just back from a short break in Canary Islands, found this family of G.G.Shrikes about ten minutes walk from where i was staying, fantastic birds and a change to see them on their breeding grounds instead of a distant view on a cold winters day.
Female caught what seemed like a small Alien at one point and signs of bigger predators around going by the lizard bones.
I will try and upload some pics for you to view of both parent birds and one of the fledged young.

Hi Bob
You can upload pics at 800x600 pixels or even 1024x768 and if you need a prog to do this plenty on the web that are free or there is one on the CCG website on the members page you can download for free but is only good for XP users.

John

Westoe cem first thing this morning at feeders; woodpigeon, goldfinch, chaffinch, house sparrow, wren, robin, blue tit, great tit, crow, blackbird, starling, magpie. Had a quick wander around the rest of the cem but very quiet apart from woodpigeon. Got stopped by an old man walking his dog who said, "you look lost son, you want to be at the fenced in area to see any birds, that's where all the proper birdwatchers go because they feed them". I didn't have the heart to say anything!

Rob

It's good that the locals know about the feeding area and seem to respect it.

Rob, Jan seen 2 Brambling here yesterday about 2.30pm yesterday on the niger feeder.

Paul the locals seem to have really taken to the birds beeing feed here ...last year we were pulled up and asked why the feeders have'nt been filled up for a while!...I explained that we had planned to stop feeding dueing the breeding season here which some folk do.

Steve
That's a much debated situation. A lot of people suggest that we should continue feeding duringthe breeding season and certainly afterwards when birds are feeding young. The amount of energy used by birds during this time is immense and they need all the help they can get. What say the Group?

Paul,

In my garden I feed all year as it attracts the birds and their young in and I think this is magic. If I was stocking a feeding station in a public area I think I would stop in the spring mainly to give my pocket a rest plus you have done your job and helped the birds (and mammals) get over the winter.
