I know what you mean John, checked and double checked to make sure they were horse mushrooms and not yellow stainers. These were all the size of tea plates, about five inch across. Just had one with my tea, one of the tastiest mushrooms i've ever had. Our lass took some convincing before she tried one but loved it. I'll let you know if i start seeing six foot blue rabbits jumping on the sofa

This thread brings back memories of staying with my granda on a weekend and picking Horse mushrooms at Temple Park at stupid o'clock in the morning! He used to always cut them at the base of the stem with his baccy knife, if its a yellow stainer it will discolour straight away. The Horse mushroom smells nicer as well, like aniseed.

Aye the smell's a big give away, yellow stainers have an inky / phenol smell and taste. Have to say the ones i picked were lovely, i'll keep an eye out for more

Had a quick visit to Westoe Cem this evening after no1 son saw a disgrunted chav with his staffie trying to kick the locked gates in at the feeding area! Managed to prise the gate open and lock it properly so no other clowns will damage it beyond repair.

Anyways, had a quick walk around as I haven't been in for a few weeks and spotted 5 of the 6 fungi I normally see there. Yellow Stainers, Bracket fungi, Cramp balls, Inkcaps and best of all 8 prime, saucer sized Horse mushrooms in amongst a least another 30 past their best. Just missing the Jews Ear for a full house.

Looking forward to my breakfast now!

Saw a couple of saucer sized fungi down by Trow the other evening Rob but thought I'd best leave them for people who know their onions otherwise I could end up in hospital.
