A short walk around the Don near St Paul's in Jarrow produced the Bee Orchid I was after. Or at least I think thats what they are.

Please fill in the blanks if you know what the others are.

Hi Sid

I probably missed a whole lot more while I was down there but I primarily went for the Bee Orchid and thought I may have gone too soon.

Not too sure on the other flower but thought it looks like a Cuckoo flower, sometimes called Lady's Smock.

I decided to go further afield yesterday so me and the dog went to Chopwell woods, what a great place it is. I decided to do the river walk which is about three and a half miles long mainly because the dog likes a paddle.

As I had so much to carry in photography equipment, water, etc I decided to leave my bins at home. As always, a BIG mistake as the place is alive with birds. I set up with a macro lens on but also had my long lens as I was hoping for some shots of the red kites. Despite going to the view points in the woods I couldn't find any kites.

I did find lots of insects and flowers. The insects are on the separate thread.

Thoroughly recommend the walk, boots are recommended because it was wet in places and rough in others. I wore trainers and it was fine. It is described as strenuous but I don't think it is just a bit up and down with a few steep bits.

Found Bee Orchids on the Leas this morning after years of searching. I wonder if they have always been here or or if it has something to do with the weather as the grass this year seems to be much shorter and sparse in places.

Hi John,
It's always hard to ID from photo's, especially when there is nothing to scale from in the picture, however, this is mine and Matt's best guess:
The first two are bee orchids (not that you were asking about those). The third picture is possibly wild mignonet (but definitely not yellow rattle), the fourth looks like yarrow and the final one looks like a pink flowered hawthorn.

A site you may be interested in to get thing's id'd is the ispot website:
http://www.ispot.org.uk/
It's an open university initiaive and exists exactly for this reason to help people identify what they see in nature.
Cheers

Some photos from the garden today in between the showers. The three shots are all of nigella.

Amazing to think they would name this flower after a TV cook
