A walk along the Leas this morning and I must say the plant life is looking great right now and when the grasses get uo to full height next month it will be even better.

Out now are the Buttercup, Clover, Cow Parsley, Thrift, Vetch, Cowslip and Bluebells and quite a few more that I don't know the names of but try to look them up when I can. Problem then is to try to remember them for the next season when next they return.

Trip along the Leas later today- the grass cutting this year looks good in resect of wildlife etc. A bit puzzled as to why a area of grass has been cut very close to the hedge and has a cut grassed pathway leading to it?

Hi Steve
I asked the question just after it was cut and it is to do with the model airplane flyers who had a patch further south for their use but have relocated.

Lady's Slipper Orchid - Britain's rarest plant, almost picked to extinction in Victorian times, with just one plant surviving. Modern day plants have all been brought on from that single surviving plant Picture taken at Gaitbarrows, during a trip to Cumbria with my mate Michael_A.

Useless with plants Sid but here goes-

4. A type of irise
5. A type of orchid...spotted or early purple poss.?

Thats about the same guess as I would make Steve, with possibly 5 as a Spotted rather than Early.

John

We need a resident botanist on this forum. Nice photos but oxeye daisies and common spotted orchid are my limit. I also spotted a plantain flowerbut not sure which species.

I agree Brian botany was never in the curiculum at the school I went to although I was told the school was approved whatever that meant .

I don't know what the larvae are on the grass but suspect it could be six spot burnett as they tend to come out in a couple of weeks time I think.
