Hi Rob
Definitely not Speckled Wood as I have them in the garden and it was far too large and just checked the White Admiral but don't think it fits the bill either. Just wish I had the camera now

I have a Speckled Wood in the garden that has been around for at least a couple of months now and fights off any butterfly that encroaches on its patch. That too is starting to look a bit worn now and the other day it landed on the wall and got the attention of the puppy who quite likes the feeling of butterflies in his stomach and made a lunge for the butterfly which escaped my the narrowest of margins.

Two red admirals in my garden this morning feeding on next door's 'mile a minute' plant flowers.

A few Red Admirals around today and also a Coma in WCP. The butterflies in WCP appeared to be either feeding or sunning themselves on the buckthorn.

Everywhere I've been over the last 2 days I've seen Red Admirals! The Leas, The Don, Temple Park, Biddick Hall all full of them!

There is still a couple in the garden along with the old Speckled Wood which has just turned up again after going missing for a few days. All are feeding on the ivy along with Bees, Wasps etc.

Spotted some kind of dragonfly or damselfly today on the footpath which cuts through the Newton Garth farm fields and heads down to the burn. Too far away for an ID but I was amazed to see anything in the middle of October.

Quite possible they did just die Sid as the whole colony dies except for the queen (I think) who hibernates til next year. Its this time when they are dying that they can become aggressive .

Nice picture of a shieldbug Sid but not sure which one.

There is a thread on Birdforum dedicated just to shieldbugs:-

You can often identify them from this thread.

When I was down on the North Yorkshire coast on Sunday there was a red admiral flying around. Must be the latest I have seen any butterfly.
