Meadow Brown butterflies on the Leas this morning and Common Blues emerged a couple of days ago. I think the coast always seems a little behind places inland, probably due to the weather down here (still going out with a coat on).

Hahahahaha very funny John - we are a hardy bunch up here in the NE - hope your coat isn't the full blown winter variety Else you'll have to be known as a southern softie

Hi Derek
Just call me a softie then. . Like they say there isn't any bad weather just wrong clothing and on this coast I have experienced all the seasons in one day.

Went to the area behind the Cock Crow Inn this morning to look for cinnibar moths and found everything but them. Loads of butterflies including small skipper, large white, ringlet, meadow brown, etc. Also plenty of damsel flies around the pond area. The biggest disappointment was opening my camera case to find my camera batteries just about dead - hence no photos. I need a brain transplant desperately.

The problem with the Canon 7D is the batteries last for months and months and you forget about charging them.

Trip to Witherslack in Cumbria today with my mates Michael A & Daz A in the hope of Dark Green Fritillary and High Brown Fritillary.
Met up with some of the Cumbrian Butterfly Conservation members and joined their guided walk - didn't take long before we connected with Dark Green Fritillary and then we literally saw loads of them... Just before we stopped for lunch we got our second target the High Brown Fritillary..

Anyway total of 11 species seen today; Dark Green Fritillary, High Brown Fritillary, Small Pearl Bordered Fritillary, Northern Brown Argus, Common Blue, Small Tortoiseshell, Ringlet, Speckled Wood, Large Skipper, Small Heath and Green Veined White.

Pictures in order Dark Green Fritillary (Wings Up), Dark Green Fritillary (Wings Open), High Brown Fritillary (Wings Up) & High Brown Fritillary (Wings Open)

Small Skipper and Ringlet, both seem to be doing better this year than last.

I haven't seen any reports of a painted lady this year has anyone seen one? 2009 was a great year for them as they were all over the place, last year I only saw one but this year I haven't seen any.

Saw one on Tuesday down the back of St. Paul's when I had 10 minutes to look around down there but nothing else of note due to the very high tide.

At the Queen Elizabeth hospital this afternoon with the wife when we both noticed a humming-bird hawk moth feeding on the flowers near the front entrance. I grabbed a few hurried shots with my crappy phone and none of them came out very well, so I've posted the one where you can just about make it out. We were stood only about a foot away from it for several minutes until it flew off, watching in absolute amazement at the size and speed of this beautiful creature.
